Man charged with DUI after 1 killed, 8 hurt in SC crash

JOHNS ISLAND, S.C. — Police said a man is facing charges after a person was killed and eight others were hurt in a crash in South Carolina Saturday evening, WCIV reported.

The collision happened on Johns Island, which is near Charleston.

According to officers, an SUV was traveling west on Maybank Highway when it went across the center line and sideswiped a car heading east. The SUV then collided with another car head-on, WCIV reported.

A passenger in the backseat of the second car died at the hospital, and the driver of that same car is in serious condition, officials said.

A total of eight people involved in the crash were taken to a hospital to be treated for their injuries.

The driver of the SUV, Jose Javier Reyes-Escobar, 21, was arrested and charged with three counts of felony DUI, one count DUI, no driver’s license, and open container.

No other details have been released.
