Men charged in case of slain Uber driver extradited to Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The men charged in the murder of a local Uber driver have been extradited back to Mecklenburg County and will face a Charlotte judge for the first time.

Diontray Adams has been fighting extradition to Charlotte for weeks, but a judge finally agreed with officers at Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department headquarters and decided to send him back to the Queen City.

Police said they found Adams and James Stevens driving a stolen car in Maryland in May.

Investigators said the pair stole the car and a credit card from their Charlotte Uber driver, Marlo Medina-Chevez, 44.

Medina-Chevez was driving for Uber in order to earn extra money for a family vacation, relatives told Channel 9.

It took investigators a week before they found his body in a Rock Hill field. He had been bound and badly beaten, investigators said.

Adams has been back in Charlotte and faced a judge Wednesday. Stevens was booked into the Mecklenburg County jail Wednesday and will appear before a judge on Thursday.

Both men are charged with murder.

Edgar Medina said the hearing Wednesday may be the first step in healing the emotional wounds caused by his father's killing.

“We want justice,” Edgar Medina said. “We want something.”

He said his father was a happy man who brought so much joy to his family.

"Everything reminds us of him," he said.

Medina hopes their hearings will answer a haunting question.

"We wouldn't wish this for anybody, but we want answers like, ‘Why?’" Medina said.
