MITCHELL COUNTY, N.C. — A 47-year-old man was arrested and charged after authorities said he hit a referee at a high school basketball game Tuesday night in Mitchell County, our partners, WLOS, reported.
Jerry Dale Jones, 47, of Avery County, approached the ref after a game in the Mitchell County School gym, according to arrest warrants.

Dale allegedly pointed his finger and cussed at the ref before punching him in the face.
He was charged with assault on a sports official, disorderly conduct and resisting a public officer.
Jones was arrested and held on a $5,000 bond.
