LENOIR, N.C. — A man was arrested after leading deputies on a chase in Caldwell County Tuesday.
Authorities said they tried to pull over William Gibbs Jr. for a registration violation, but he refused to stop. He led deputies on a vehicle chase through Lenoir before stopping and running into the woods near Tablerock Road.
As officials chased after him, they saw him trying to get rid of a gun and a bag containing approximately 26 grams of a white powdery substance believed to be fentanyl.
Gibbs was eventually caught on the back deck of a nearby home and taken into custody.

Authorities later searched his home on Northwood Place and found three guns with ammunition. All the weapons were seized.
Gibbs was charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and speeding to elude arrest. Deputies said other charges are pending. He is being held at the Caldwell County Detention Center with bail set at $500,000.
“All agencies chipped in and put together a great arrest. That’s one less felon terrorizing our county,” Sheriff Alan Jones said.
No other details have been released at this point.
