CONCORD, N.C. — The murder of a 13-year-old girl at the Concord Mills Mall last year stunned many in the Charlotte region and beyond, including people who did not know her.

On Monday, the man accused of killing Aveanna Propst is expected to face a judge.

Police said Dontae Milton-Black shot Propst in December 2019 outside the Dave and Buster’s at Concord Mills. The shooting started as a verbal altercation between another teen and Milton-Black in a common area inside the mall.

Propst and two teen boys were caught in the crossfire, according to Concord police.

Authorities said a 15-year-old boy was also charged with murder.

In December, as police searched for the suspects, Channel 9 spoke to Propst’s mother Danialle Mackin. She said she was on her way to pick up Propst and her other two daughters when she got a frantic call that Propst had been shot.

Propst’s cousin Derron Jordan was also murdered in Concord, just three hours before her death. The suspect in that case is expected in court as well.

Police said 16-year-old Omarionne Hudson shot and killed Jordan at a bus stop on Lincoln Street. U.S. Marshals tracked Hudson down in Connecticut.

Authorities said the two murders are not connected.
