CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The winter storm blasting the East Coast has left hundreds of military members and families stranded at Charlotte Douglas International Airport.
The USO Club at the airport has become a makeshift base for military members who had their flights canceled or postponed.
Pfc. Asa Aldridge is looking for a hotel room and a bus back to Camp Lejeune in Jacksonville.
“I was supposed to catch a flight today at 4:15, but it got canceled,” Aldridge said.
Pvt. Nicholas Ellul arrived in Charlotte Wednesday morning and said it could be a while before the next flight to Jacksonville.
“It was originally Sunday, so that's what we were originally looking at, and now it's looking like Monday,” Ellul said.
The USO is accustomed to large crowds during the holidays, but not typically because of weather.
“We were here until about 10 o'clock last night, making our rounds,” Ellyn Brotherton, with USO Charlotte, said. “We went over to Harris Teeter and bought them a bunch of hot pizzas.”
A few staff and a team of volunteers have kept the USO Club open for the last two nights to make Camp Charlotte as comfortable as possible.
