Major boom could come with proposed outlet mall

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Channel 9 has uncovered new plans that show a major boom could be coming for a part of Charlotte.

J.C. Slawter is preparing to open her new salon on Steele Creek Road at 485, right next to a shopping center that is vacant.

But based on what she's been hearing, she's hoping that's about to change.

"I believe it's going to really be busy and be good for small business," says Slawter.

In new plans filed with the city of Charlotte, Tanger offers new details about the proposed Charlotte Premium Outlet mall just down the road from Slawter.

It's planning 10 large buildings full of stores with glass-covered, open-air walkways.

Also planned: a 120-room hotel, gas station and convenience store, bus stop shelter and outdoor playground.

The mall is planned at Steele Creek and Dixie Rover Road.

On the other side of the highway, Eyewitness News found a rezoning request for a huge office industrial park on 42 acres.

Another large industrial park is planned down the highway at Sandy Porter Road and 485 on 114 acres of land.

Jeff Edge, with the Charlotte Chamber of Commerce says the infrastructure in the area is finally catching up to other parts of Charlotte.

"You really need three things for development -- roads, water and sewer -- and I think all those are there today, and the development community recognizes that as an opportunity," says Edge.

Neighbors also say a farm right across from the outlet mall sold last week, and a developer has plans for a Harris-Teeter and a fast-food restaurant.
