CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Allstate is expanding its operations to Charlotte, bringing more than 2,250 jobs over the next three years to the Queen City, Gov. Roy Cooper announced Wednesday at the Charlotte Chamber.

The insurance company is expected to invest more than $22 million in the Charlotte area with the expansion, Cooper said.

"Charlotte's role as a leader in the financial services sector makes our state an excellent fit for Allstate," Cooper said. "North Carolina has so much to offer growing companies, including our celebrated universities and community colleges, highly skilled workforce, competitive business climate and outstanding quality of life."

The company already employs 1,400 people in the Charlotte area, and Cooper said that factored into Allstate's decision.

"Allstate already had a presence, here and they knew about the quality of life in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg area and the strong work force that was here," Cooper said.

Allstate said the types of jobs available will be varied, but Channel 9 found out the jobs will pay an average of $46,000 a year.

Cooper said the expansion will grow the state's economy by $3.9 billion over 12 years.

"It will be an investment that will pay off for many, many years to come," Charlotte Mayor Jennifer Roberts said.

Allstate's expansion in Charlotte will be facilitated in part by a Job Development Investment Grant (JDIG), which was approved by the state's Economic Impact Committee on Wednesday.

Taxpayers are shelling out up to $17.8 million through that state grant. Cooper says the investment is worth it.

"We have to make sure we attract the very best-paying jobs for our people," Cooper said.

Allstate will get the grant from North Carolina over the course of 12 years, but the company must meet expectations to provide all of the jobs.
