CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A board of executives for the new American Airlines could be named by the end of the month, but the merger with US Airways still is not a done deal.
The company needs to get federal approval from regulators.
The Department of Transportation and Justice Department have to sign off on the merger as the Secretary of Transportation, Anthony Foxx, would ultimately be the one to sign off on a federal level if he is confirmed.
On Friday, the airlines told its employees it will take about 18 months to merge operations completely once they get approval.
In the meantime, US Airways and American are moving forward with making sure difference aspects of the merger are in place.
Merging the two companies will cost about $1.2 billion.
Even still, experts expect the American Airlines to make $2.5 million in profits this year and $3.8 million next year.
The new airline estimates it will serve 187 million customers per year and fly to and from 336 destinations.
One of the many elements that need to be worked out is with various unions.
