CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Police have received several reports in south Charlotte of mail being stolen.

Channel 9 learned Tuesday that a neighborhood in Matthews has had three complaints of mail theft, and they’re asking neighbors to be on the lookout.

Police said someone is grabbing mail out of mailboxes and taking off with it. Police are working with postal officials as part of their investigation.

Inspectors said they’ve gotten reports in four ZIP codes: 28210, 28211, 28270 and 28277. They are sending out letters asking people to be on the lookout.

Officials did not reveal much about their investigation. Police said they have a good idea what the mail thieves are looking for.

“Gift cards are the big thing now,” Matthews police officer Tim Aycock said. “They’re looking for (when) someone sends a get-well card or a birthday card or graduation, any kind of special event.”

Thomas Flint lives a few doors down from one of the victims and points out that people might not even realize they’ve been targeted.

"It would take awhile before you even realize it happened to you,” Flint said. “That’s the concerning part.”
