CHARLOTTE — Officials at a post office in Ballantyne said someone broke into mailboxes at its facility and stole mail.

"That particular piece of mail had money in it,” said a woman who did not want to be identified. “It was a check from family members for Christmas.”

The check never made it to her home.

“When it didn’t come yesterday, I thought somebody stole it from the mailbox,” she said Monday at the post office. “I'm here to find out if for some reason it didn’t make it to my mailbox or if it was stolen.”

Another resident said, “It’s a terrible, terrible problem. In my particular case, five Christmas cards each containing $100 wrapped in individual envelopes” are missing.

She said she posted about it in a Ballantyne Facebook group and learned dozens of other residents had the same problem.

The two residents who Channel 9 spoke with did not place their mail in the blue box.

Officials with the United States Postal Service said they were aware of the thefts and are investigating the crime.

They said residents who suspect their mail has been stolen should contact the police.
