The perpetrators approached the Lyft driver at about 11:20 p.m. outside the Greenbriar Apartments on Teal Point Drive off Central Avenue in east Charlotte, Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said.
Police said they spotted the suspects’ vehicle shortly after the shooting, but when they tried to pull them over, the driver led them on a chase.
Michael Smith and Markeis Ashford jumped from the car along with a third person, police said.
Officers caught Smith and Ashford. The third person got away.
Ashford has two previous robbery convictions and was just released from prison in April.
The victim was planning to move from this neighborhood because he felt it was unsafe.
He was taken to the hospital with serious injuries.
