‘A loving heart’: GoFundMe created for family of man killed in NC trooper collision

RUTHERFORD COUNTY, N.C. — The family of the man who was struck and killed by a North Carolina Highway Patrol Trooper said he loved his children and he loved life.

Dusty Luke Beck was killed on Jan. 3 after he was hit by a responding trooper during a traffic stop.

Officials said Trooper John S. Horton had pulled Beck, who was riding a motorcycle, over just before 9 p.m. in Mooresboro at High Shoals Church Road in Rutherford County. A second officer, Trooper James Horton, who happened to be John Horton’s brother, was responding to the stop when he lost control of his car and crashed into the parked patrol car, striking both John Horton and Beck, who were both standing along the roadside.

Beck was pronounced dead at the scene. John Horton was taken to a hospital in Spartanburg where he later died.

Beck’s family created a GoFundMe to help with funeral costs and to assist the family.

“This is going to be a long fight and healing process for all who loves him,” his sister Seledia Carver said on the GoFundMe. “He had such a loving heart and wanted (the) best for everyone. He loved his babies and he loved to just live.”
