WATAUGA COUNTY, N.C. — Friends and family of the people killed in a Watauga County shooting exactly one year ago plan to remember them Thursday.
On April 28, 2021, a 13-hour standoff at a Boone home claimed the lives of five people, including two deputies.
A special memorial is planned for Thursday night to honor and remember those two Watauga County sheriff’s deputies who made the ultimate sacrifice that day. Sergeant Chris Ward and K-9 Deputy Logan Fox died during the standoff.
The tragedy rocked the community and several people are expected to participate and pay their respects Thursday night, including members of the Blowing Rock and Boone police departments.
Ward and Fox were ambushed, shot and killed while doing a welfare check at a home on Hardaman Circle in Boone. The suspect’s mother and stepfather, Michelle and George Ligon, were also killed in the mass shooting. They were found dead inside the home.
Investigators said the gunman was Isaac Alton Barnes. They said the 32-year-old died by suicide.
Thursday’s memorial service starts at 7:30 p.m. It’s happening at the Watauga County Law Enforcement Center.
>> Channel 9 Reporter Dave Faherty will attend the memorial. Look for his report on Eyewitness News starting at 6 p.m.
