LONG VIEW, N.C. — Long View police have arrested a man and charged him with killing his wife.
Police said Ronald Lane, 61, walked into the Long View Police Department Wednesday and announced to police that he had killed his wife.
Police responded to the home on 39th Street Place SW and found 60-year-old Aubrey Lane dead, officials said.
Family members said Lane took his gun with him after shooting the woman he had been married to for 42 years.
"They were sweethearts when they were young," brother Randy Lane said. "He wouldn't have hurt a hair on her body. I know my brother well and she as like a sister."
Several family members and friends told Channel 9 they had never seen the couple fight in the four decades they were married.
Lane, 61, appeared confused at times while in court Thursday morning. The judge asked him repeatedly if he understood what was going on and moved him closer to him because of his hearing problems.
Relatives told Channel 9 that Lane, who was a deacon at his church, wasn't himself, and said he may have left the suspected murder weapon in his truck before going to the police department.
"I've never heard him raise his voice to my aunt and it is unbelievable," niece Lisa Bumgarner said. "I don't know how to feel. Something is desperately, seriously ill with my uncle."
