GASTONIA, N.C. — Working out can be more than getting fit -- it can help people’s mental health too.

That was the goal of Saturday’s “Sanity, Not Vanity” workout in Gastonia.

The organizer, Fonda Bryant, said she wants to bring awareness to how exercise can help people who are battling mental illness.

“Working out when I had a bad day. And I go in the gym -- I can feel those endorphins. So, for me, the gym helps me, and I know it helps so many others that deal with mental health issues," Bryant said.

This year’s workout had to be scaled down due to the coronavirus pandemic, but Bryant was able to make it work with the help of former NFL player Tremayne Stephens who hosted it at his gym.
