CHARLOTTE — A Charlotte-area man has been charged for his involvement in the attack at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6.
Bradley Bennett was arrested April 12 and charged with one felony count of obstruction of justice/official proceeding and five misdemeanor counts related to unlawful and/or disorderly conduct.
According to federal arrest documents, photos and videos posted to Bennett’s Facebook account show him inside the Capitol and the Senate chamber. Bennett also admitted on social media that he “Stormed the Capitol” and it was “OUR HOUSE!” according to documents.
Federal documents said tipsters and witnesses also identified Bennett inside the Capitol.
On Wednesday, U.S. attorneys asked that Bennett remain in jail until trial. Their motion said Bennett tried to avoid being arrested for weeks after a woman he lived with was arrested for storming the Capitol.
Investigators said they tried to arrest Bennett on March 23 in Texas, where he had been living, but learned he had moved earlier that month. A few days later, he returned a rented vehicle in Pineville, North Carolina, according to documents.
Detectives continued to track Bennett over several days and learned he was in Charlotte. According to federal documents, authorities spoke to someone in communication with Bennett. That person said Bennett admitted that he was trying to avoid being arrested.
According to federal arrest documents, Bennett was using the encrypted social messaging app Telegram to communicate with people. Investigators also learned he was staying with a friend in Fort Mill, South Carolina for a few weeks.
Bennett then turned himself in to authorities in Charlotte on April 12.
Attorneys also said Bennett should remain in jail until trial because he doesn’t have a permanent address and “No condition or combination of conditions will not prevent him from cutting an ankle monitor and disappearing again.”
On Friday, the court ruled that Bennett will remain in jail until trial. The date for his trail has not been announced.
