Local malls closed Thanksgiving, plan to open Black Friday

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charity Washington, the owner of Captivate Boutique in SouthPark is gearing up for Black Friday. This is her first year at the mall offering her luxury clothes for women.

“I want to give the full experience as if you are in Neiman Marcus or if you’re in Burberry,” Washington said.

In September, Simon Properties, which owns SouthPark Mall, Concord Mills and Charlotte Premium Outlets announced all malls will be closed on Thanksgiving Day. It’s a major change to the trend we’ve been seeing over the past few years as more retailers opened with extended hours.

This change will impact Washington. Even though her store can’t open until Black Friday at 6 a.m., she’s launching deals online on Thanksgiving Day. She’s offering 30% off, an increase from 20% off last year, in hopes of recouping some revenue lost during the pandemic.

“Everyone can shop in store and online. We have increase our product for our online customers,” Washington said.

Washington said online sales are up 30% compared to in store. She attributes that increase to her huge following on Instagram. She’s styled celebrities like local artist Anthony Hamilton.

If do you plan to shop in store for Black Friday, Washington said she’ll be following all the guidelines.

“...because of COVID, we are definitely increase our precautionary measures. We are wearing a mask, we are checking temperatures, we’re making sure we have hand sanitizer for people to use,” Washington said.
