CHARLOTTE — The NC Compassionate Care Act, a bill to legalize medical marijuana, is no stranger to the North Carolina Senate floor.

When it was called the Senate Bill 711, it made some progression last year but didn’t get past the North Carolina House of Representatives.

Channel 9 reporter Dan Matics spoke to Nicole Burnette, one of the owners of Queen City Hemp in the Charlotte area, who is hopeful an amended version of the NC Compassionate Care Act, S.B. 3, will legalize cannabis products for medical purposes.

“We know for a fact that medical marijuana helps with pain,” said Burnette.

Jason Husser, director of the Elon Poll, conducted a poll on medical marijuana, and his data shows one in five NC voters oppose marijuana for medical use.

He told Channel 9 most of the decision for approval relies on the House of Representatives.

“A great deal of what happens in the house depends on where house leadership stands, particularly House speaker Tim Moore where he stands, house districts are smaller,” said Husser.

Moore opposed the bill last year.

S.B.3 received its first vote in the Senate committee Tuesday, but has a long road ahead before it can potentially become law.
