CHARLOTTE — Two local Girl Scouts have won the Girl Scout Silver Award for their documentary telling the untold stories of the Black history of Charlotte.
The Girl Scouts Hornets’ Nest Council presented the award to Maya McClain and Morgan Winston and showed their film at Queens University on Saturday. After the film, Maya and Morgan did a 20-minute question-and-answer segment about their work.
Tayuanee Dewberry, CEO of the Girl Scouts, Hornets’ Nest Council, told Channel 9 the goal of the film was to showcase the strong role the Black community played in making Charlotte great.
“Black people have been integral in making this city great. We want to make sure that story is told in conjunction with the overall story of this great city,” Dewberry said.
The organization says projects like these are part of a continuing effort to preserve all of Charlotte’s local history.
