A winter storm 1,400 miles away is now impacting our local furniture industry.
Channel 9 reporter Dave Faherty visited Bassett Furniture in Newton and Craftmaster Furniture in Alexander County.
They said that the Texas winter storm has created a shortage of foam needed to make furniture like couches and chairs.
Both plants are seeing unprecedented numbers of orders but the shortage has delayed furniture production and employees are losing hours.
Craftmaster Furniture makes 4,000 furniture pieces a week. Next week, its hundreds of employees will only be working 3 days, even though orders have increased by 40%.
“We have plenty of work for the company but can’t get foam in,” said supervisor Jeff Miller. “We could work 50 hours a week if we had the foam.”
Watch Channel 9 Eyewitness News at 5 to hear from employees and the companies the foam shortage has affected.
