CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Lori Levine and Eric Sklut announced that the Levine-Sklut Family Foundation will match donations dollars for dollars to Loaves and Fishes up to $25,000. They’ll match up until Jan. 31, 2020.
It’s a huge gift that will help stock 37 pantries with fresh fruits, veggies, dairy and meat next year.
“We see so many families who suffer with diabetes, heart disease, kidney disorders. So, if they’re just eating food that’s saturated with fat and salt and sugar, in the long run it’s not helping in their situation,” Tina Postel, Executive Director of Loaves & Fishes, said.
Postel said while many people give non-perishable food items, Loaves and Fishes uses donations to buy fresh food.
Cheryl Raske and Jimmy Cavouras shopped at a Loaves and Fishes food pantry for the second time, Friday. The pair survived Hurricane Katrina, and two hurricanes in the Charlotte area over the past few years.
“We had some real estate down in New Orleans. Everything got wiped out. We lost everything,” Raske said.
Raske admits it’s been tough getting back on their feet.
“We were two weeks away from a social security check with no food left, no crackers. Nothing, this is life saving,” Raske said.
Families who are referred get to shop at the pantry for a week worth’s of groceries.
For Raske and Cavouras, they’re grateful that people give so they can eat.
“People like us really don’t know how to deal with it because we’ve always been on the other side, you know. But, you just have to start asking,” Raske said.
