Several local breweries, from longtime powerhouses to much smaller operations, snagged awards in this weekend’s Great American Beer Festival in Denver, Colorado.
One of the nation’s biggest and best-known competitions for craft brewers, the GABF returned after a two-year pandemic hiatus to celebrate its 40th anniversary in 2022. This year’s festival showcased 500 breweries from 46 states plus Washington, D.C., with more than 2,000 beers poured on the festival floor, according to its website.
For the competition, more than 9,900 beers were submitted by commercial breweries in addition to dozens of collaboration brews and pro-am entries. Three hundred medals were awarded across 177 beer styles.
Protagonist Beer was the only local brewery to win more than one medal, bringing home both a gold and a silver.
Eleven breweries across North Carolina brought home a total of 13 medals, and two South Carolina breweries won one each.
