Former President Donald Trump won the battleground state of North Carolina on Tuesday, the AP projected.
Trump receives the state’s 16 electoral votes after defeating Democratic nominee Kamala Harris.
Trump also won the state in 2016 and 2020, but Democrats had been optimistic they could reverse previous outcomes with campaign spending, canvassing and Harris rallies. They also tried to link Trump to embattled Republican gubernatorial candidate Mark Robinson.
But Trump and running mate JD Vance visited North Carolina often during the fall campaign, pushing a more protectionist economic agenda and promises to crack down on illegal immigration and the southern border.
11:15 p.m.
Democrat Jeff Jackson is projected to win the North Carolina Attorney General race. His opponent Republican Dan Bishop conceded Tuesday night.

Former President Donald Trump won South Carolina, the AP called Tuesday night. He earned its nine electoral votes for the third straight election. South Carolina has not voted for the Democratic nominee for president since 1976, when Democrat Jimmy Carter -- the governor of the neighboring state of Georgia -- defeated Republican President Gerald Ford throughout the South. Four years ago, Trump won 55% of the vote, matching his performance from 2016. Given the success Republicans have in the state, presidential candidates rarely spend time campaigning there. The Associated Press declared Trump the winner at 8:01 p.m. EST.

North Carolina voters were more likely to say Trump was better able to handle immigration, and he was slightly preferred to handle the economy, according to AP VoteCast, an expansive survey of more than 3,600 voters in the state. Voters preferred Harris to handle abortion policy and health care. They were split on which candidate was better able to handle tax policy.

4:10 p.m.: Voting will be extended in the Pilot Mountain precinct in Burke County by 30 minutes due to printer problems from 6:30 a.m. to 7:10 am. The Burke County GOP Chair submitted an affidavit saying he witnessed at least seven voters leave early. The Burke County election director confirmed a laptop did not boot up properly and IT had to be summoned. He doesn’t believe anyone left but the board is extending out of caution. Burke County results will not be posted until 8 p.m. This will not impact results for the rest of North Carolina.

4 p.m.: The North Carolina State Board of Elections voted tonight to extend the voting hours of the Gardners School precinct in Wilson County by 30 minutes.
The precinct opened at 6:30 am but poll workers were not able to print voter authorization forms and manual voting was not offered.
Voters were not processed between 6:40 a.m. and 8:07 a.m. A line formed. Up to 10 voters left and four are believed to have returned. This will impact results for Wilson County in North Carolina, but not the entire state.
