Lincolnton woman shot during domestic disturbance, sheriff’s office says

LINCOLNTON, N.C. — A Lincoln County woman is recovering in the hospital after being shot Thursday night.

According to a release from the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, the shooting happened around 8:45 p.m. on Sunny Hill Drive. Responding officers found a woman lying in the front yard and she was shot in the stomach.

The woman, 46-year-old Cheryl Youvette Ussher, was taken to the Caromont Regional Medical Center in Gastonia.

Several family members, including Ussher’s children, were in the home at the time she was shot. Witnesses told law enforcement that Ussher’s recently separated husband, 44-year-old Jerry Matthew Cox, shot her in the stomach while she was making dinner.

Deputies said the shooting appeared to be unprovoked.

The sheriff’s office charged Cox with attempted first-degree murder. He appeared before a magistrate in Lincoln County and was then placed in jail. He’s being held on a $750,000 bond.
