Substitute teacher cited for throwing party involving underage drinking

NOW PLAYING ABOVE

LINCOLN COUNTY, N.C. — Investigators said a substitute teacher and her husband allowed students to drink and get drunk at their home in Lincoln County on Nov 1.

Eyewitness News reporter Ken Lemon uncovered the allegations and why it took weeks for police to cite the couple.

Investigators said Amanda Watts threw a birthday party for her husband, Alfred Watts, at their home near Lincolnton.

There were adults, alcohol and some of their daughter's friends who attend West Lincolnton High School.

Amanda Watts had been a substitute teacher for some of them.

Lt. Jon Propst said he's not sure if the couple brought or served alcohol, but they knew teens were drinking.

"There were probably four or five there drinking," Propst said. "Two of them got drunk."

He said one became so sick that Alfred Watts and Amanda Watts made another student take him home.

We're told when he got home his parents were not happy.

Investigators said in the next few days his parents pressed him about where he got drunk. He eventually told them and his parents told investigators.

Investigators discovered that some of the teens still had pictures of themselves and others drinking at the party.

Alfred Watts said this incident is being blown out of proportion and his attorney would straighten it out.

Lincoln County School officials removed Amanda Watts Friday from the list of approved substitute teachers. She worked for them for three months.
