Lidl closes two North Carolina stores amid strategy change

German grocer Lidl is shifting its strategy in the United States with store closures and openings.

The company closed at least 11 stores on July 16 — including two in North Carolina. Lidl stores in west Cary and Thomasville were among the locations to get the axe. The decision to close the stores was based on poor sales, according to Lidl spokesperson Chandler Spivey.

“These were underperforming locations, and we made the strategic decision to close these stores so we can focus on the locations that are closer and more convenient to more of our customers and where we are seeing significant growth,” he said.
