CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A German grocery store chain has officially backed out of plans to build a new store in Charlotte, according to a lawsuit a developer filed.
The lawsuit claims Lidl, the grocery store, breached contract for pulling out of projects to build in Cary, Wilmington and Charlotte. The developer said the grocery store chain refused to pay its share of the site, which amounts to more than $430,000 and is seeking $1 million in damages, according to WWWY Wilmington.
Initially, Lidl planed to build the store on a contaminated Brownfield site on South Boulevard. Channel 9 found the site abandoned in January, after Lidl agreed to clean up the site in exchange for tax breaks.
