CHARLOTTE — For the first time since the pandemic began, Charlotte Mecklenburg students will be able to dance again at schools this spring, the School Board announced last week.

CMS canceled proms districtwide in 2020 and 2021 as COVID-19 guidelines made proper social distancing impractical at the in-person events.

Last year, CMS leaders told principals to consider other school activities to celebrate students, including homecoming courts, senior recognition nights, virtual celebrations, drive-through celebrations, drive-in movies and senior priority for athletic events.

In their announcement, CMS officials advised school principals to proceed with caution as they begin planning the dances in case COVID-related mandates limit social gatherings again.
