CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte city leaders are poised to approve an incentive package for an Atlanta-based shoe store they say will bring jobs and millions of dollars to the area.
The incentive package for Off Broadway Shoe Warehouse, worth about $187,000 was on Monday night's City Council agenda.
Off Broadway's parent company, Rack Room Shoes, is already headquartered in the University City area and company officials said they planned to build an addition to the existing facility.
"It's a win-win for Charlotte," said councilman Michael Barnes.
The company promised to create 72 jobs, with an annual salary of about $74,000, and to invest $16 million in the project.
Barnes said it will create value in other ways, as well.
"It helps draw other businesses to the community ... anytime you get a headquarters in a city, it's a good thing," Barnes said.
Incentives from the county and state grants brought the total package to more than $1.1 million.
Residents were excited about the news, telling Channel 9 the high-salaried positions are rare opportunities for those out of work.
"I think it's a great thing, as long as they're bringing more opportunities to the city," said Charmane Johnson.
