Leaders meet in Austin, Texas, to decide location of Republican National Convention

AUSTIN, TEXAS — Charlotte's bid to the host the Republican National Convention in 2020 now goes through a committee in Austin, Texas.

The Republican National Convention Site Selection Committee meetings begin Wednesday.

Charlotte leaders vote 6-5 to endorse hosting RNC in 2020

The official word that Charlotte has been selected could happen by the end of the week.

Eyewitness News reporter Joe Bruno is in Austin to cover the major decision.

The meetings are taking place Wednesday through Friday at the Fairmont Hotel and starts at 10 a.m. local time.

The committee is composed of 20 to 30 people and will likely have a vote in a closed session meeting.

Bruno learned Tuesday that representatives from the Charlotte Regional Visitors Authority are arriving Wednesday afternoon in Austin.

Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles and four council members are planning to arrive in Austin Thursday afternoon, according to a source.

City Council members approved the convention Monday night by a narrow vote of 6 to 5.
