CHARLOTTE — The lawyer for the mother of Shanquella Robinson filed a lawsuit in the Charlotte woman’s death.

“Shanquella Robinson’s family, through this lawsuit, seeks compensatory and punitive damages to address the profound emotional and financial toll this incident has caused,” stated Attorney Sue-Ann Robinson in a news release.

Shanquella Robinson mysteriously died two years ago while on a vacation with her six travel companions known as “The Cabo Six.”

She died a day after arriving at their villa in Cabo San Lucas.

The six people she went to Cabo with said she died of alcohol poisoning, but authorities said Robinson died of a broken neck.

Shortly after her death, a video began circulating that showed a woman beating her. In the lawsuit, Shanquella’s family said the six people on the trip with her never told a doctor about the attack. They said the Cabo Six repeatedly refused a doctor’s request to take her to a hospital.

Nobody was charged. Now, the family of Shanquella Robinson hopes to do what they say law enforcement would not.

“The family continues to call for the arrest and extradition of Daejhanae Jackson, who is wanted in Mexico for femicide,” Sue-Ann Robinson stated.

Her mother is suing the Cabo Six, alleging multiple counts of wrongful death, battery, negligence, conspiracy, and emotional distress. The lawsuit also names the U.S. Department of State and the FBI as defendants.

“This lawsuit is not just about seeking justice for Shanquella Robinson; it’s about holding accountable those who were entrusted with the duty to investigate, act, and protect the interests of U.S. citizens abroad,” Sue-Ann Robinson wrote. “The heartbreaking details of Shanquella’s death and the subsequent mishandling by federal authorities only add to the family’s grief, and they deserve both full transparency and justice.”

The suit says Shanquella Robinson’s mother, Sallamondra Robinson, experienced anxiety, depression, and other mental distress after her daughter’s death.

The Robinson family is suing for compensatory and punitive damages.

‘I need justice for my child’

Sue-Ann Robinson hosted a news conference Tuesday to speak about the lawsuit. The family prayed in the hallway for a few minutes before stepping in front of the cameras to make their case.

Sallamondra Robinson spoke about her push for answers.

“I’m fed up with this stuff. I need justice for my child,” she said.

She said any action now won’t bring her daughter back, but it will bring resolution to a painful saga.

“We should have been had justice,” she said. “Even if they couldn’t arrest the whole Cabo Six, some of these people should have been already in jail, long time ago. Long time ago.”

The lawsuit says the FBI denied the family’s request for documents because it would take five years to get those records. It also says the U.S. State Department didn’t help get the vacationers extradited.

“The federal government has a duty to thoroughly and quickly investigate a claim,” Sue-Ann Robinson said. “And every day that they delay is justice denied for this family.”

They said they have gone two years with no arrest, no answers, and no explanation about what’s happening.

“We must confront the reality that those responsible for her murder have not been held accountable,” Sue-Ann Robinson said. “The lack of justice serves as a painful reminder of the vulnerabilities faced by individuals, especially young Black women when they face adventure in unfamiliar places with unfamiliar faces.”

“Nothing in my experience as an attorney greases the wheels of justice like litigation,” she added.

What they ultimately want is someone charged with Shanquella Robinson’s murder.

A family friend said The Cabo Six can’t run anymore.

“You had a choice,” said Irma Gardner, a friend of Shanquella Robinson’s family. “This wasn’t a mistake you made. It was a choice and when you make choices in life, they have a consequence behind every choice that you make.”

Channel 9 has reached out to the FBI and to the State Department about the suit filed by the Robinson family. Only the FBI responded, saying it’s standard practice to decline comment on pending litigation.
