Lanesboro Correctional locked down after large inmate brawl

ANSON COUNTY, N.C. — Part of an Anson County prison remains on lockdown after a big fight among inmates over the weekend.

Officials told Channel 9 that several inmates attacked another inmate at Lanesboro Correctional Institution on Sunday afternoon.

Afterwards, authorities said some inmates refused to return to their cells.

An emergency response team later searched the inmates’ and their cells and found several homemade shanks.

Prison staff treated the assaulted inmate for a cut on his arm.

Channel 9 has been covering issues at the prison for years, and just this month found out that there were 64 reports of assaults on staff members last year -- more than one a week.

Former correctional officers told Channel 9 they blame under-staffing.

The regional prison director said the Department of Public Safety can't hire more staff without funding from lawmakers.
