CHARLOTTE — Lancaster and Lincoln remain the fastest-growing counties in the Charlotte region, according to the newest population estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau.
The population figures, released Thursday, show that Lancaster County — just across the state line in South Carolina — grew 4% between July 1 of 2021 and 2022 to reach an estimated 104,577 residents. That’s up 8.9% since the 2020 Census. North Carolina’s Lincoln County — in the Lake Norman area — increased its population 3.6% over the year and 7.2% since the last Census, growing to about 93,095 people.

When looking at numeric gains, however, no local county comes close to trumping the 19,583 people added in Mecklenburg from July 2021-2022 — second highest in the state. That’s likely not surprising given Mecklenburg County is home to the city of Charlotte. The county grew 1.7% over the year and 2.7% since the 2020 Census to an estimated population of 1,145,392 as of July 1, 2022.
Two small, rural counties in the region — Chester and Anson — posted annual population declines. Chester’s population fell 0.5% — by 166 people — over the year to 31,931. Anson’s population dropped 0.2% — by 52 people — to 22,202.
