CHARLOTTE — Lake Norman has taken first place as the most beautiful lake in North Carolina.
A list published by Insider unveiled the most beautiful lakes in every state across the country.
Lake Norman is the largest man-made lake in the state; it was created in 1959 after Duke Energy started building Cowan’s Ford Dam on the Catawba River Chain.
With 520 miles of shoreline and over 32,000 acres spread across Iredell, Lincoln, Catawba, and Mecklenburg counties, Lake Norman has something for everyone, from lakeside restaurants to beautiful sunsets.
Those who are more active can enjoy different watersports and games on the lake, like boating, swimming, and hiking.
In the Palmetto State, Lake Marion took the first spot.
Created in the early 1940s, the lake covers about 110,000 acres and spreads across five South Carolina counties: Berkley, Calhoun, Clarendon, Orangeburg, and Sumter.
For avid fishers, the lake is famous for its landlocked striped bass; there are also parks and a wildlife refuge.
