CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A Charlotte widow marked the exact minute a Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department officer shot and killed her husband, Keith Scott, one year ago in University City.

Rakeyia Scott said it has been a very difficult year, full of grief and questions many of them still unanswered.

“My children, they're still going through it,” Scott said Wednesday. “We grieve just as any family would, losing a loved one.”

Scott watched and recorded her husband's final moments, frantically pleading for police and for him to stop.

“Keith, Keith, Keith. Don't you do it!” the wife said in the video shot on Sept. 20, 2016.

Then shots were fired.

“Did you shoot him?  Did you shoot him?” Scott said in the video.

Riots broke out in the streets of Charlotte the nights following the deadly shooting.

Scott said she never wanted the violence, but she still has trouble trusting the police

“The truth was not given by CMPD, and no matter what they say, my husband didn't deserve to die, Sept. 20,” she said.

CMPD was not at Wednesday’s commemoration and officials said that was a conscious decision.

“I think this is her opportunity to address the community,” CMPD spokesman Rob Tufano said.

“I don't think it's anything we want to get in the way of.”

Scott’s family attorney said the police and the community still have work to do.

“And we have got to get to a point where, we, as a society and community, begin to hold departments more accountable,” Justin Bamberg said.

The police still have not released everything that the Citizens Review Board has recommended and unless they do, they won't be completely transparent,” Bamberg said.
