K9 officers assist SROs at Iredell Statesville Schools

IREDELL COUNTY, N.C. — School resource officers have important jobs. Now, SROs at Iredell Statesville Schools have an extra set of eyes to help them do their jobs.

K9 officers are helping to keep dangerous drugs off school campuses. The canines are also trained to track a student if they run away.

Officers say the canines can detect heroin, PCP, meth, cocaine, and fentanyl.

“They can find it a lot faster than we can. We can we let them go and within 30 seconds to a minute they’ve found what they’re looking for, and so that’s a big benefit,” said Deputy Chris Atwood with the Iredell County Sheriff’s Department.
