GASTON COUNTY, N.C. — Newly released 911 calls are giving a clearer picture of what happened the night a 6-year-old boy was killed in a street racing crash.
On Tuesday, the family of Liam Lagunas was at the Gaston County Courthouse, hoping to move one step closer to getting justice for him.
A judge decided to release the 911 calls of what happened that night when state troopers said two vehicles going nearly 100 mph on a Gaston County highway lost control, and one car collided with the car Liam and his father, Santiago Lagunas, were traveling in.
“Everything, like my whole world, is missing now that he is not here,” Santiago said.
In the 911 calls, one witness described to dispatchers the moment they saw the crash.
“The red car coming around us, excuse my language, like a bat out of hell and just slammed on into the other one and just took off,” the caller can be heard saying.
Several drivers passing by saw the crash, the car on fire and stopped to try and save Liam.
“Yes, it’s a whole bunch of cars. We stopped as well. It’s like five cars that done stopped, trying to help,” another caller said.

Unfortunately, Liam did not survive.
His parents told Channel 9 that they wanted the 911 calls released as long as it’s not going to hurt the case, and it helps people understand the consequences of racing.
Donnie Ray Cobb and Gracie Eaves are facing charges in connection to his death. A trial date hasn’t been set at this time.
Officials are still waiting for a final report from the accident reconstruction team. That may not be done until January.
