Judge denies bond for man charged with killing girlfriend July 4

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Jerome Davis Jr. appeared in court for the first time Monday afternoon, and it was the first time the family of Khira McKinley had a chance to lay eyes on him.

Davis was charged with shooting and killing McKinley on July 4. Her family said they were boyfriend and girlfriend, which is one of the reasons they always suspected something.

"If he was my daughter's boyfriend,” her mother, Tammy McKinley, said “I didn't hear from him. I still haven't heard from him."

Davis is represented by prominent defense attorney Norman Butler, who asked for a bond.

Butler said they would be able to prove that it was impossible for Davis to have committed the murder.

"I don't even have words for that right now, I don't,” Kirha McKinley’s grandmother, Felicia Smith, said. “It makes you angry."

A few days before the Khiria McKinley's murder, her brother, Kenneth Armstrong, was killed in a separate murder.

The family said it's time for the violence to stop.

"We can't keep sleeping and waking up and finding out there is three or four deaths the night before,” Tammy McKinley, said. “You can get killed just going to the grocery store."

The judge did not give Davis a bond, but he'll get another chance to ask for one on Aug. 21.
