Jersey swap lets new Carolina Panthers QB Bryce Young keep No. 9

CHARLOTTE — If the Carolina Panthers’ hopes and dreams work out for newly drafted quarterback Bryce Young, the team could add number 9 to its Hall of Honor.

The rookies in the Panthers’ 2023 draft class had their jersey numbers on Tuesday, and Young will continue wearing the No. 9 that he wore while playing for the Alabama Crimson Tide.

Current quarterback Matt Corral had No. 9 before Young was drafted, and fans on Twitter wondered if there would be a number shuffle. Corral will now move to No. 2 -- it’s the number that he wore while playing at Ole Miss and in high school, but that number was held by DJ Moore when Corral joined the team. With Moore’s trade to the Bears, the number carousel is complete.

The Panthers’ store already has jerseys for sale with Young’s number, and they quickly shot up to the most popular picks on the site.

Here are the numbers the Panthers’ 2023 draft class will wear:

  • QB Bryce Young - No. 9
  • WR Jonathan Mingo - No. 15
  • LB DJ Johnson - No. 52
  • G Chandler Zavala - No. 62
  • S Jammie Robinson - No. 22
