James Best, 88, died Monday night after a brief illness and complications of pneumonia, according to his website.

While Best appeared in classic movies such as “The Caine Mutiny,” he is most remembered for his role as Sheriff Rosco P. Coltrane on “The Dukes of Hazzard,” which aired from 1977 to 1985.

Best never formally retired, continuing to act in stage productions and television movie projects.

He is survived by his wife, son, daughter and three grandchildren.

Lately, however, Best served in several roles at the Hickory Community Theatre, including a hilarious performance as Norman in "On Golden Pond," our news partner the Hickory Daily Record reported.
