CHARLOTTE — A federal judge in Charlotte has sentenced a man from Jamaica for targeting elderly people in a nationwide lottery scheme.

Antony Steward will spend seven years in prison and pay more than $1 million in restitution.

Prosecutors said for at least six years, Stewart called older people and told them they won money in the lottery.

However, they would need to pay fees and taxes before claiming their winnings.

The U.S. Attorney said she hoped the sentencing would send a message to scammers.
