'It’s very inconvenient’: Residents at local Days Inn say they were given hour to leave

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Carolina Howie is one of several people who have shared their frustrations with Channel 9.

Howie said staff at the Days Inn off Woodlawn Road gave all of its residents and guests an hour to get their things and leave.

“They could have given us a better notice -- two week notice, a week notice, a 24 hours notice. Its very inconvenient,” she said. “They say they’re understaffed. They called us about 11 a.m. (Monday). They said we have to be out by 12 p.m.”

The hotel’s General Manager said he had no other choice than to close the hotel because his employees are refusing to work due to safety concerns.

Howie told Channel 9′s Gina Esposito that the hotel is her home. If she’s forced to leave, she said she’ll have to live in her car.

“Most of us don’t have resources to go no where or get somewhere real quick. We all just kind of stuck on stuck,” she said.

While residents said they were told to get out by noon, most told Channel 9 they’re not leaving.

Candi Moss said she’s already paid to stay the week.

“I have four kids, its not right for them to say have you to leave. We pay our money. That’s not right. I feel like I’m going to stand for something. I’m going to stay here. Government say I can stay here, so I’m going to stay here,” Moss said.

Staff at Days Inn would only confirm that the motel would be closing, but did not say when and why.

Wyndham Hotels & Resorts said the hotel is independently owned and operated, as it is a franchised property.

The General Manager said he has been working with the residents who refused to leave. He is offering refunds to those who had paid. He said the hotel will be closed Tuesday.
