CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Two men have been arrested after a shooting at an Airbnb party in north Charlotte last Thursday, police said.
Channel 9′s John Paul went by the home on Statesville Avenue and said bullet holes could been seen in the wall and garage.
“It’s concerning. It’s really concerning,” said neighbor Mike Llorens.
Llorens lives a few doors down from the home and said he was asleep when the shooting happened at around 3 a.m.
“Not good. It bothers me that somebody could have a party, then all the sudden there’s a shooting that goes on,” he said.
The party was caught on camera by several neighbors. One person told Paul that their motion-activated camera went off so much that the battery died.
According to a police warrant, there was a party in the Airbnb at 2101 Statesville Avenue. At some point, a car drove through the alley behind the home and someone shot at people gathered there. After, police said stolen guns were found.
Although police haven’t confirmed if they caught the shooter, they did arrest two people running from the party.
Aaron Barnes and Tyquan Cureton both face several charges, including having a stolen gun.
A big question remaining is why a large party was every held at the Airbnb. In 2020, Airbnb banned parties and gatherings of more than 16 people. The guest and host could be punished for breaking the rule.
Paul found the listing for the house on their site for $240 a night.
Full statement from Airbnb:
“Airbnb bans parties and we have no tolerance for the reported behavior. We have removed the booking guest from our community and we are in contact with CMPD to aid in their investigation.”
For neighbors, some said that might not go far enough.
“I can see that sort of thing happening again, something like that getting out of control,” a resident said.
Airbnb said it has created an “under 25 anti-party system” -- it basically stops people without a positive history from booking a whole house or during popular times. They said in 2021, in Charlotte alone, it stopped or redirected 4,800 bookings.
The company is asking for people to reach out to them if there are any issues with an Airbnb.
