Investigators working to pinpoint cause of fatal house fire in Mount Holly

MOUNT HOLLY, N.C. — Investigators are trying to figure out what started a house fire that left a person dead early Wednesday in Mount Holly.

Mount Holly police were called just after 2 a.m. to reports of a fire at a home on Wood Street. When they got there, police and firefighters said the house was engulfed in flames.

According to police, three people were in the house and two of them were able to escape uninjured.

17-year-old Gabriel Isaac Payne was found dead inside.

Gaston County Emergency Management and Fire Services is investigating the cause of the fire.

Officials said the home suffered major damage in the blaze.
