CHARLOTTE — A man died after a shooting at an apartment complex in north Charlotte Wednesday afternoon.

Chopper 9 Skyzoom flew over the area along Oaklawn Avenue around 4 p.m. At the scene, we could see several fire engines, ambulances, and growing crowds of people.

According to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, shots were fired in the Double Oaks neighborhood, on Oaklawn Avenue near Ethel Guest Lane.

Police said dispatchers received calls about a shooting and a vehicle on fire in the same area.

Officers say they arrived around 3:45 p.m. to find 25-year-old Carlos Leiva shot inside an SUV that crashed and caught fire. Channel 9 saw first responders perform CPR on the man near the burning vehicle, as Charlotte firefighters battled the flames.

Officers said Leiva died from his injuries.

“I came out and it was the police, the ambulance, and everything was out here,” said Quantrena Falls. “It’s shocking especially when you have little ones.”

CMPD did not share suspect information.

Police are speaking with witnesses and combing through any surveillance video detectives can get their hands on.

CMPD is asking anyone with information about the shooting to call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
