MONROE, N.C. — An investigation is underway after an inmate died Sunday morning at the Union County Jail.
The State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) will conduct the investigation.
Police took 29-year-old Dustin Kemp Medlin into custody early Sunday morning on charges of possession of methamphetamine and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Officials said Medlin was being held in a single observation cell and was still being booked when he was reported appearing sick and lethargic. He was then seen by a jail nurse.
EMS was requested around 6:15 a.m. and transported Medlin to CMC-Union, where he was pronounced dead.
The medical examiner will determine the cause of death, but officials do not suspect foul play.
Underwood said an SBI investigation is ongoing in this case and is considered standard protocol involving the death of someone in custody.
