Inside the rise of Rock Hill's University Center redevelopment

ROCK HILL, S.C. — In the three years since the 23-acre former textile industrial complex on the edge of downtown Rock Hill was renamed University Center, more than $100 million has been poured into the Bleachery property.

Buildings have been transformed for office space, a new event center is nearly finished and the next major phases of the mixed-use development are ready to start. The project will result in 13 buildings being redeveloped or built.

Much of what comes next will move the university part of the development off the drawing board — and connect Old Town Rock Hill, as the city’s downtown is known, to Winthrop University.

When complete by 2023, students and locals will be able to stroll through the urban infill project and over Dave Lyle Boulevard by a meandering pedestrian bridge to Old Town.
