Innocent woman seriously hurt in drive-by shooting on east Charlotte road, CMPD says

CHARLOTTE — A 27-year-old woman was seriously hurt in a drive-by shooting on a busy road in east Charlotte on Sunday, police said.

It happened on The Plaza around 6:30 p.m. that day. Channel 9 crime reporter Glenn Counts could see a large crime scene that stretched down The Plaza between 34th and 35th streets.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said the victim was an innocent woman, who was driving on The Plaza, when she was shot. The driver’s side window of her car was shot out.

Investigators said the woman was taken to the hospital Sunday where she was in critical condition and stable.

A man told Channel 9 he was outside when the shooting started.

“Really just stressed out, I can’t even get my words together right now,” he said.

He talked to Channel 9 on the condition that we not show his face.

“Sounded like fireworks,” he said. “I was like, ‘those don’t sound like familiar.’ Sounded louder and harder and I just really, to be honest, ran for it. I saw a window get shattered and that’s not fireworks.”

Police don’t know why the gunman opened fire and said they don’t believe she was the intended target. Several bystanders rushed to help her.

“She was just limp,” the worker recalled. “The car was just driving on its own and everybody had to push it and stop it. A guy, a good Samaritan, went in then tried to help her out, put the car in park and everything.”

Police are looking for a dark-colored vehicle in the case. They don’t have anything more specific than that. Investigators are hoping to fine-tune that information, though, and release it to the public and get some help to solve this case.
