Detention officers found Dunn inside his cell and started CPR, but paramedics pronounced him dead.
Dunn was booked into jail Sunday on assault and trespassing charges while Darby was brought to the detention center Monday on drug charges.
Investigators have not said whether the two men knew each other or released a motive for the killing.
The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigations is investigating.
“This incident is tragic, and I would like to thank the NCSBI for their assistance with this issue and bringing the matter to a conclusion,” Cleveland County Sheriff Alan Norman said in a release. “It is the aim of the sheriff’s office to ensure all investigations are conducted meticulously and professionally, regardless of the situation.”
